We are excited to celebrate Chinese Language Week by welcoming linguistics expert, Svetlana Chevenko, back to teach us -
50 Chinese Characters (in just one hour)!
2pm Sunday 26 September on Zoom.
Svetlana promises to "plunge us into the life of ancient China and show how the ancient Chinese created this unique system of writing".
Svetlana has dedicated the latter part of her career to researching and refining methods for automatic recognition of characters. Her unique approach utilises our imaginations to make connections and includes etymology tales, pictures and games. What better way to learn!
Originally from Ukraine, Svetlana spent six years studying Chinese, Japanese and English at Moscow State University, and got a PhD in applied linguistics at the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Svetlana worked as a researcher at the Academy for many years before coming to New Zealand in the early 1990s, studying automatic translation from Japanese and automatic recognition of Chinese characters.
Why not grab the whole family, some afternoon tea and see what sticks? You might just surprise yourself!
